Painting Workshop with SAMA: Celebrating Women’s History Month
Join us for a special two-part art making workshop in partnership with the San Antonio Museum of Art, celebrating Women’s History Month through the work of iconic artist Georgia O’Keeffe.
Inspired by SAMA’s current exhibition Canvas to Clay: Georgia O’Keeffe & Maria Martinez to Mata Ortiz & Tonalá, this hands-on workshop invites you to explore O’Keeffe’s groundbreaking floral paintings and create your own artwork in her spirit. We’ll begin with an introduction to the exhibition and O’Keeffe’s life and legacy, discovering how she challenged conventions and transformed the way we see the natural world.
Then it’s time to create! You’ll practice “slow looking” by observing fresh floral arrangements, taking time to notice color, form, and feeling. Using O’Keeffe’s approach as inspiration, you’ll paint flowers from observation, capturing their essence and impressions rather than perfect details. No art experience necessary; this workshop is about exploration, self-expression, and honoring the creative spirit within you.
We’ll close with time to reflect on the art making process and share our experiences together. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate Women’s History Month by connecting with the legacy of a woman who painted boldly and lived authentically.
All art materials provided. Childcare available. Light refreshments served.
Save the date for our next Women’s History Month artmaking workshop!
